Discovery Flight · first light at KLGB

Left seat, Long Beach. You fly the plane.

A real first lesson, not a sightseeing tour. A proper brief on the ground, then the left seat of the 172 G1000 over Long Beach and the Southern California coast, with your instructor beside you the whole way.

Your first takeoff

Nobody forgets their first takeoff off Long Beach.

  1. Hold shortYour instructor runs the checklist out loud. Nothing is skipped.
  2. ThrottleThrottle forward, and the runway blurs.
  3. 55 knotsAround 55 knots, you pull back. Gently. That’s all it takes.
  4. LiftoffThe ground lets go of you.
  5. 500 feetMost people are grinning before 500 feet. You’ll see.

The left seat is the pilot’s seat. It’s yours.

Nervous is the right amount of careful.

The first-timer in the parking lot right now is nervous. The airline captain was nervous on her first lesson too.

Your instructor’s hands are on the controls with yours — they never leave.

Nervous means you’re paying attention. Good. Pilots pay attention.

What to expect

Your Discovery Flight at KLGB, in order

  1. 01

    Before you fly

You meet your instructor, walk around the airplane together to see how a preflight inspection works, and go over the plan for the flight — no prior knowledge needed.

  2. 02

    In the air

Once you’re airborne from Long Beach Airport, your hands go on the controls. Your instructor talks you through turns, climbs and descents, and has dual controls the whole time.

  3. 03

    Back on the ramp

Back on the ground, your instructor walks you through what you did, answers your questions about training, cost and timeline, and signs your logbook. What comes next is up to you, in your own time.

Good to know

Meet the airplane and the instructor, not a sales pitch

A Discovery Flight is designed to help you experience the aircraft, the instructor, and the training environment before committing to a larger plan. If you decide flying is for you, it’s also how you judge us: the airplane, the instructor, and whether our approach fits how you want to learn.

Questions

Discovery Flight questions

Still unsure? Call 866-600-9595.

Do I need any previous experience to start?

No. Everyone’s flying journey begins with a first lesson, and ours start from zero flight time. Your instructor teaches you everything one-on-one, from the preflight walk-around to your first takeoff.

What is a Discovery Flight?

It’s a real first flight lesson — $269 — in a Cessna 172 out of Long Beach Airport, with a Certified Flight Instructor beside you. After a short briefing you take the controls and fly the airplane yourself. The time counts in your logbook, and there’s no commitment afterward.

Is it safe?

Yes. You train in the Cessna 172 — quite possibly the most-used training aircraft in history — kept clean and professionally maintained, with an instructor at a second set of controls on every lesson. Your instructor makes the go/no-go call on weather, and safety is the first priority of everything we teach.

How do I get started?

Call 866-600-9595 or send us your details, and we’ll help you plan your first steps. Most students begin with a Discovery Flight — a $269 first lesson with you on the controls.
